Beautiful Madness: The Extraordinary True Story of the Cartledge Family
Beautiful Madness is the extraordinary true story of the Cartledge family, a family of artists who lived in a world of their own creation. The family patriarch, John Cartledge, was a brilliant but eccentric painter who believed that art was a way to communicate with the divine. His wife, Mary, was a talented musician who shared her husband's passion for art and beauty.
The Cartledges had four children: Michael, John Jr., Anne, and Clare. Each of the children inherited their parents' artistic talents, but they also inherited their father's mental illness. Michael, the eldest son, was diagnosed with schizophrenia and spent much of his life in and out of mental hospitals. John Jr., the second son, was also diagnosed with schizophrenia and committed suicide at the age of 22.

Anne, the eldest daughter, was a gifted artist and musician. She married a man named Peter, and they had two children. However, Anne's mental illness eventually led to the breakup of her marriage and the loss of custody of her children.
Clare, the youngest daughter, was the only one of the Cartledge children who did not suffer from mental illness. She became a successful artist and teacher. She wrote a memoir about her family's experiences, which was published in 2012.
Beautiful Madness is a heartbreaking and inspiring story about a family of artists who lived in a world of their own creation. It is a story about the power of art to heal and the devastating effects of mental illness.
